Γιάννης Δερμιτζάκης

Giannis studied oud with Giorgos Mavromanolakis at the "Chorodion academy of music" in Heraklion, Crete. He participated in seminars on "Turkish style oud", "Rhythmical & free improvisation" and "The Phrasing of Makam" at the Labyrinth Musical Workshop with Yurdal Tokcan, Harris Lambrakis, Kyriakos Tapakis and Ross Daly respectively as well as taken part as a student in an ensemble of Labyrinth Musical Workshop under Ross Daly's direction. He has performed during book presentations and in various music festivals in Greece and in Italy. He has also composed music for documentaries, short films and workshops of the Experimental Amateur Stage of DIPETHE Crete.

 He has collaborated with Giorgos Papaioannou, Manolis Kanakakis, Maria Ploumi, Giorgos Mavromanolakis, Glafkos Smarianakis, Marijia Katsouna, Michalis Kotis, Eugenia Toli, Peter Jaques, Theodora Athanasiou, Fanis Karousos, Zoi Vergaki, Giorgos Stavrakis, Giannis Papatzanis, Akis Pitsanis and Ilias Markantonis amongst others.

 On September 2021, in colaboration with director Maria Gaitanidi gave a presentation of their project: ¨Ερωφίλη - παρτιτούρα (Erofili - score), practical experiments with an oud and a voice¨, on TaPRA 2021 conference, which was hosted in partnership with Liverpool Hope University. He also has taught "Oud" and "Rythmical improvisation" at the Music School of Ierapetra and at the Conservatory of Haris Sarris in Heraklion and also has given seminar about "Modal improvisation" at the Greek music school "Kanarini" in Berlin, Germany. He used to lead a traditional music enseble working on songs and tunes of East Medditeranean music traditions and researching improvisation techniques and he regularly participates as a visiting lecturer in the research educational program of the University of Crete "The art of rhythm in education", which is under the guidance of Giannis Papatzanis. He is curently an MA student at the Music department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
