Γιάννης Δερμιτζάκης

Giannis studied oud with Stelios Kasapakis, Giorgos Mavromanolakis and Kyriakos Tapakis. He has participated in seminars on "Turkish style oud", "Rhythmical & Free improvisation" and "The Phrasing of the Makam" at the Labyrinth Musical Workshop with Yurdal Tokcan, Harris Lambrakis and Ross Daly respectively. He has performed at various music festivals in Greece and in Italy [Labyrinth Music Festival (2012, 2015, 2016 & 2025), Ihoanthos festival (Rethymno, 2025), Apeiranthos music festival (Naxos, 2014), Sitias Mediterranean festival (2017 & 2024), Festival delle tori (Italy, 2018), 2ο Rebetiko festival (Athens, 2025)], as also has composed music for the documentary: Mystery 20 Performing Arts Initiator - Narrative Archaeology directed by Michael Marmarinos in the framework of "2023 Eleusis - European Capital of Culture, as well as for short films and workshops of the Experimental Amateur Stage of DIPETHE Crete.

 He has collaborated with Haris Lambrakis, Giorgos Papaioannou, Eirini Tornesaki (Erini), Manolis Kanakakis, Maria Ploumi, Avgerini Gatsi, Giorgos Mavromanolakis, Eugenia Toli, Peter Jaques, Theodora Athanasiou, Nikos Paraoulakis, Giannis Papatzanis,  Manousos Klapakis, Sofia Efkleidou, and Giorgos Kontogiannis amongst others.

 On September 2021, in collaboration with director Maria Gaitanidi they gave a presentation of their project: ¨Ερωφίλη - παρτιτούρα (Erofili - score), practical experiments with an oud and a voice¨, at the TaPRA 2021 conference, organised in partnership with Liverpool Hope University. He has taught "Oud" and "Modal music theory" at the Music School of Ierapetra, at the Conservatory of Haris Sarris in Heraklion, at the "Stratis Kalogeridis" conservatory in Sitia, as also has given a seminar on "Modal improvisation" at the Greek music school "Kanarini" in Berlin, Germany. He regularly participates as a guest lecturer in the research educational program of the University of Crete "The art of rhythm in education" under the direction of Giannis Papatzanis. Giannis is a graduate of the Electrical Engineering Department of the TEI of Crete and holds a Master's degree in "Ethnomusicology and musical practice" from the Department of Music Studies of the University of Athens.
